ENGLISH LESSONS FOR JAPANESE SPEAKERS

My Adult English Classes specialize in Japanese speakers.

I studied Japanese when I was a student at Yale University, so I know the issues.

The issues of pronunciation for Japanese speakers are very easy to fix.  The big one is the problem with “R” and “L.” In my Conversational English Classes, we fix this problem permanently in less than five minutes!  I promise!  In many, many years of giving English classes for Japanese speakers, I have developed my own method.  It always works!

There is another problem for Japanese speakers in English.  Most English teachers (ESL teachers) no not understand this.  I understand it because I know how the Japanese language works.

The structure (you can say the “architecture”) of a Japanese sentence is very different from an English sentence.  In Japanese, you begin with a long introduction (called a “clause”); in the middle there is often a small word (like “は“ or “が” or “も”) that sends the sentence in this direction or that direction; than at the end, you finish the idea and have the main verb.

In English, it is the opposite!  You start with the main subject and main noun, then you add other ideas at the end.  English is much more direct (and therefore, it is much easier).

There are two other big differences for Japanese speakers.  In English, every verb (action word) must have someone or something doing that action.  Who is doing it must be clear.  This is not true in Japanese:  It is not spoken directly.  In English, it must be spoken directly.

The other issue for Japanese speakers is politeness.  In my ESL Classes for Adults, I teach English polite enough so you can talk to a king!  But the way to be polite in English is very different than in Japanese.

In my Adult English Classes, you also learn English Presentation Skills.  Presentation is very different in English and Japanese.  This is not only a language issue.  It is also a cultural issue.  My long experience with Japan and Japanese students make my ESL Classes for Adults special and unique.

HOW OUR ENGLISH LESSONS FOR JAPANESE SPEAKERS WORK

Grammar and Vocabulary

Many people ask me, “What text book do you use?”  Here is my answer:  YOU are the textbook!

In my personal, custom-designed English Lessons for Japanese Speakers, we start where you are in your English, wherever that is.  As you speak, I listen to your grammar and find the difficult places.

Because I speak some Japanese, I understand WHY you are making certain English grammar mistakes.

The vocabulary you need in English depends on the way you use your English.  Do you speak English mostly at work (Business English Lessons)?  Do you spend time with new English-speaking friends (English Conversation Lessons)?  Do you need help with your writing (English Writing Lessons)?  Do you give presentations or speeches (English Presentation Skills and English Speech Lessons)?

In my English Lessons for Japanese Speakers, I make sure you have the vocabulary you need, and the grammar to use it properly.

Conversation and Comprehension

Maybe you have good English grammar and a good English vocabulary.  The next question is:  How is your Pronunciation (English Pronunciation Lessons)?

If you have a problem with the “R” and “L,” I have a personal technique to teach that in less than five minutes!

Is your English easy to understand?  Do you say your words correctly?  Is the rhythm natural sounding?  The rhythm of English is very different from the rhythm of Japanese.

These are all things you cannot learn from books.  (A secret:  It is obvious when  Japanese speakers learned their English from books or from foreign teachers!  Their English does not sound natural!)

For excellent, natural English, you need a personal English teacher who is a native speaker.  A personal American English teacher raises your English to the next level!

I promise you, it will be effective – and fun!

GREAT ENGLISH TIPS TO REMEMBER:

1) Be sure to speak slowly!  Many students speak much too fast!  It is difficult to understand you when you speak too fast.  Also, you do not have time to think about your vocabulary and the fundamentals of English grammar.  Slow down!  Speaking is not a race!  LOL!

2) Be sure to say every letter and every syllable.  In my Adult English Classes, you will learn how to give the correct “weight” to each letter and each syllable in a word.  This will make your English clear and beautiful.

3) Remember this: The best English is the most simple English!  You will always sound good with simple, short sentences.  The best English is the clearest English.

4) Your two ears are your best teachers!  Listen to everyone around you.  The world is full of teachers.  If people use words or expressions you do not understand, write them down and bring them to your next Adult English Class.

5) Relax and enjoy your English.  A conversation in English is not a competition.  Everybody has a different style.  You have your own style.  You could call it the “flavor” of your native language.  It can make your English unique and beautiful.
