ENGLISH LESSONS FOR PORTUGUESE SPEAKERS
I am a specialist in teaching English to Portuguese speakers. Many students in my Adult English Classes (Adult ESL Classes) come from Brazil or Portugal.
Portuguese is one of the most beautiful languages in the world! There are two main problems many Portuguese speakers have in English:
The main problem is rhythm. One of the beauties of Portuguese is its strong rhythm (especially Brazilian Portuguese). It is almost like the waves of the ocean! If you listen to Portuguese, you hear this rhythm: STRONG (weak); STRONG (weak); STRONG (weak). This rhythm works well in Portuguese. English is different. In English, a Portuguese rhythm means that the “weak” words get “swallowed up” and disappear! In English, that is difficult to understand. Remember that English comes from German. In German-style languages, every syllable must be individual and clear. With my many years of Conversational English Classes for Portuguese, I can fix this problem.
Another English problem for Portuguese speakers is when to make the “ed” of the past tense an extra syllable. For example, is the word “walked” one syllable or two? (It is one syllable!) Is the word “decided” two syllables or three? (It is three syllables.) Why? I have discovered a very simple rule, which I will teach you in my Adult English Classes (Adult ESL Classes). This problem will disappear!
HOW OUR ENGLISH LESSONS FOR PORTUGUESE SPEAKERS WORK
Grammar and Vocabulary
Many people ask me, “What text book do you use?” Here is my answer: YOU are the textbook!
In my personal, custom-designed English Lessons for Portuguese Speakers, we start where you are in your English, wherever that is. As you speak, I listen to your grammar and find the difficult places.
Because I teach so many Portuguese-speaking students (Brazilian and European), I understand WHY you are making certain English grammar mistakes.
The vocabulary you need in English depends on the way you use your English. Do you speak English mostly at work (Business English Lessons)? Do you spend time with new English-speaking friends (English Conversation Lessons)? Do you need help with your writing (English Writing Lessons)? Do you give presentations or speeches (English Presentation Skills and English Speech Lessons)?
There are many words in Portuguese that are almost the same in English. We concentrate on those to make sure you know the rules for converting a French word into English.
In my English Lessons for Portuguese Speakers, I make sure you have the vocabulary you need, and the grammar to use it properly.
Conversation and Comprehension
Maybe you have good English grammar and a good English vocabulary. The next question is: How is your Pronunciation (English Pronunciation Lessons)?
If you want to use the words in Portuguese that are similar to English, you must be able to pronounce them correctly. I will help you with that.
Is your English easy to understand? Do you say your words correctly? Is the rhythm natural sounding? The rhythm of English is very different from the rhythm of Portuguese.
These are all things you cannot learn from books. (A secret: it is obvious when Portuguese speakers learn their English from books or from foreign teachers! Their English does not sound natural!)
For excellent, natural English, you need a personal English teacher who is a native speaker. A personal American English teacher raises your English to the next level!
I promise you, it will be effective – and fun!
GREAT ENGLISH TIPS TO REMEMBER:
1) Be sure to speak slowly! Many students speak much too fast! It is difficult to understand you when you speak too fast. Also, you do not have time to think about your vocabulary and the fundamentals of English grammar. Slow down! Speaking is not a race! LOL!
2) Be sure to say every letter and every syllable. In my Adult English Classes, you will learn how to give the correct “weight” to each letter and each syllable in a word. This will make your English clear and beautiful.
3) Remember this: The best English is the most simple English! You will always sound good with simple, short sentences. The best English is the clearest English.
4) Your two ears are your best teachers! Listen to everyone around you. The world is full of teachers. If people use words or expressions you do not understand, write them down and bring them to your next Adult English Class.
5) Relax and enjoy your English. A conversation in English is not a competition. Everybody has a different style. You have your own style. You could call it the “flavor” of your native language. It can make your English unique and beautiful.
