ENGLISH PRESENTATION SKILLS
Many students come to my Adult English Classes to learn English Presentation Skills.
What are English Presentation Skills? They are the ability to 1) know what you want to say; 2) know how to say it; and 3) know how to “deliver” it.
Organizing your thoughts and writing a good script – those are things you also learn in my English Writing Lessons. But “delivery” is a special English Presentation Skill.
What is “delivery”? Delivery is the ability to 1) give a message; and 2) make sure that people receive it.
If you give your message but nobody receives it, the message has no effect. If you order a pizza delivery and the man leaves the pizza box on the street corner, is that a proper delivery? No. He must make sure that box goes from his hands and into your hands. (And it must be still hot!)
It is the same with English Presentation Skills. Your audience must receive your message.
English Presentation Skills training includes Public Speaking. Many people are afraid of public speaking, but it is not difficult. In my Adult English Classes, I have techniques to make it easy for you. Who is your audience? What response do you want from them? What is the right approach? What is the right speed for your presentation? What materials do you give your audience? These are all English Presentation Skills you will learn in my Adult English Classes.
As you learn these things, your English will improve – and your confidence will improve in many, many areas of your business life, and your personal life, too.
HOW OUR ENGLISH PRESENTATION SKILLS LESSONS WORK
Structuring Your Presentation
Online English Presentation Skills Training starts and ends with your message. What exactly is your message? How do you explain it? How do you make it interesting? How do you make it important for your audience?
A good presentation is, of course, a piece of writing (English Writing Lessons). The difference is that your listeners hear your message rather than read it.
Good English Presentation Skills mean that you organize your message well. The ideas must be in good logical order. Your listeners must follow you easily from Point A to Point B and Point C. For this, you must be clear about what you want to say. You must be clear about the priorities of your points: Which is the most important? Which is the next important?
In my 23 years as an editor at The New York Times, these are the same questions I asked New York Times writers every day.
Finally, what is your “Call to Action”? What do you want your listeners to do on the basis of your presentation? What are the three most important points that you want them to remember?
These are skills you can learn. I teach them every day in my Online English Presentation Skills Training.
Delivering With Confidence
Good “delivery” is very important when you give a presentation.
To “give” a presentation is one thing. To ”deliver” your message means making sure your audience receives what you are giving them.
If you order a pizza, you want the pizza box in your hand! If you do not receive it, it is not a “delivery.”
You must speak slowly and with confidence (English Speech Lessons) Your pronunciation must be clear (English Pronunciation Lessons).
Finally, your Presentation must sound natural. Sounding “natural” comes with practice and teaching. You will find both in my English Presentation Skills Training.
I personally have given presentations in a foreign language. When I was a book publisher in London, I gave sales presentations in Paris – in French.
I know the difficulties of English Presentation. I also know that it can be learned! That is what my English Presentation Skills Training will do for you.
GREAT ENGLISH TIPS TO REMEMBER:
1) Be sure to speak slowly! Many students speak much too fast! It is difficult to understand you when you speak too fast. Also, you do not have time to think about your vocabulary and the fundamentals of English grammar. Slow down! Speaking is not a race! LOL!
2) Be sure to say every letter and every syllable. In my Adult English Classes, you will learn how to give the correct “weight” to each letter and each syllable in a word. This will make your English clear and beautiful.
3) Remember this: The best English is the most simple English! You will always sound good with simple, short sentences. The best English is the clearest English.
4) Your two ears are your best teachers! Listen to everyone around you. The world is full of teachers. If people use words or expressions you do not understand, write them down and bring them to your next Adult English Class.
5) Relax and enjoy your English. A conversation in English is not a competition. Everybody has a different style. You have your own style. You could call it the “flavor” of your native language. It can make your English unique and beautiful.
