ENGLISH WRITING LESSONS
I was an editor at The New York Times for 23 years, so I am an expert in good writing. I am also an expert in how to teach good writing. When you edit a writer (even a New York Times writer), you are teaching that person how to write better.
Many students need English Writing Lessons.
I help many students with their applications and essays for college and graduate school. I also help business people with important emails, important letters and reports. I am an expert at all of these.
Some students want editing help on a piece of writing. Other students want lessons in how to become better writers. Sometimes their “problem” is the English. More often, the problem is in how to write. My students become better writers, even in their own language!
HOW OUR ENGLISH WRITING LESSONS WORK
COURSE LEVELS AND STRUCTURE
In our English Writing Lessons, we begin with your own writing! Your own writing will show clearly what your problems are and how to fix them.
“Writing” does not only mean long essays, applications or reports. Emails and texts are also writing. If that is the kind of writing you do, we will start there.
There are two parts to your English Writing Lessons. First there is the English itself. Do you have problems with English grammar? Are there areas in grammar you are not sure about? As you write, we will fix those problems.
Writing is also a good way to increase your vocabulary. Do you understand the meaning of every word? If there are two words in the dictionary for the same idea, do you understand the difference? These are things you will learn in your English Writing Lessons.
In addition to the English, there is the writing itself. Are your ideas clear? Are they in the right order? Is your writing interesting? Is the tone correct for your audience?
Your English writing lessons, from a NEW YORK TIMES editor, will make you a better writer in your own language – not only in English!
ESSAY AND REPORT WRITING
Many students use my English Writing Lessons to write their application essays for college, graduate school and grant applications. Others come for help with job application letters or to create better résumés (C.V.’s). English Writing Lessons at VirtualEnglishTeacherOnline.com specialize in this kind of writing.
Your professional reports, emails, letters, memos and texts will also improve.
Whatever kind of writing you do, you can improve it here with a NEW YORK TIMES editor.
PRACTICE AND FEEDBACK
Do you have a specific piece of writing that needs editing? We will edit it together. Is there time pressure? No problem! We will get to work!
Many students need practice in writing essays for tests. The fundamentals of good English writing are always the same: Simple clear English is always the best place to start.
I look forward to helping you become a better writer in our English Writing Lessons.
HERE ARE THREE GREAT WRITING TIPS:
1) Write like you speak! If you know what you want to say, say it out loud and write down the words exactly as you say them. Usually, that creates good writing.
2) Remember: The best English is the most simple English! Start with short, simple sentences. You do not need anything long or fancy. The most important thing is to be clear. You will always be right with good simple clear English.
3) If you have a long essay or application to write – do not start at the beginning! Do not worry about a “perfect opening.”
Make a list of every idea you have, in any order. Do not write whole paragraphs: Just write a few words to remind you of the idea. After you write them all down, print out your list (if you wrote on a computer). Then take an old-fashioned scissors (!) and cut the ideas into strips of paper. Put all the strips on a table and arrange them in the order you want. Put a piece of Scotch tape over the strips of paper to keep them in order. That is your essay! Then write each paragraph. When you are finished, then smooth it out and polish it.
Did you notice something about this page? All my sentences were short and simple. This is good, clear English. Was any sentence on this page difficult to write or read? No! Not at all! You also can write this way.
You will learn this kind of good clear English writing in my English Writing Lessons.
